June is Dairy Month, giving all South Dakotans an opportunity to appreciate the contributions of the dairy industry!
With more than 118,000 dairy cows, South Dakota produces 2.59 billion pounds of milk each year. To put this in perspective:
- A gallon of milk weighs about 8.4 pounds
- A pound of cheese requires 10 pounds of milk
- One gallon of ice cream requires 8-12 pounds of milk
Dairy products provide most of the calcium in our diets, which is essential for building strong bones and teeth.
Join South Dakota Corn in celebrating dairy farmers—we suggest a tall glass of chocolate milk or a double-dip ice cream cone!
